A tap & die set is used to create or repair threads: • Tap = internal threads (female) in holes • Die = external threads (male) on rods or shafts
A ratcheting version of the tap/die handle adds a ratchet mechanism so that you can turn the tap/die back and forth in limited swing arcs, without having to remove and reposition the wrench after each partial turn. This is especially useful in tight spaces.
Many ratcheting tap/die sets include adapters, locking mechanisms, and guide systems to help align the tap/die and reduce “walk back” (i.e. unwanted backward movement) during threading.
